The answer is never simple — each city offers advantages that the other can't match, and the best commercial photographers in the US work across both. Here's a practical comparison from someone who works in both markets.

The Light

Miami offers warm, golden natural light for most of the year. The sun sits lower on the horizon in winter, creating long golden hours that are ideal for lifestyle, fashion, and automotive work. Even midday light in Miami, while intense, has a quality that reads as "vacation" and "luxury" on camera. You can shoot outdoors almost every day of the year.

New York offers something different: a dramatic, directional light that bounces between buildings and creates natural chiaroscuro effects you can't engineer. Miami also offers easier logistics — fewer permitting requirements, less pedestrian interference, and easier parking for production trucks.
